FAVORITE IMAGES: The Work of Photographer Richard Schwarzchild, taking place in the Main Gallery of Flushing Town Hall from August 10-September 2, 2007, is an exhibition of 29 of the photographer’s favorite color photographs, selected from his vast collection. The show spans almost thirty years of work, much of which was taken abroad. But, whether the photographs are from Thailand, Namibia, Italy or Jones Beach, they display a sense of peace and order, informed by an eye for detail and punctuated by an ironic wit.

Contemporary Chinese art has become hot in the global art market. However, most Chinese artists are men with teams of assistants working for them. While technology plays an important part in the trendy art scene, there is a small but strong group of Chinese women artists in New York who create their art differently ?with their own hands. They use age-old methods, traditional materials and objects found in nature to give substance to their dreams and imaginings, making a connection with the natural world. The rules they find embedded in nature reappear in their artwork in a multitude of ways, speaking passionately with visual impact but with a contemporary touch that is both subtle and natural.

Delicate and detailed hand-carved wood frames and latticework transformed ordinary windows and doors into works of art, which added beauty and pleasure as well as function to the historic Chinese home. This exhibit, on loan from the private collection of Thomas Chen, president of Crystal Window & Door Systems, brings to life the development of Chinese windows and doors as architectural elements, infused with ancient culture, philosophy and symbolism.
